You are invited to Thompson, MB, on May 13, 2025, for a Manitoba First Nations Leadership Mining Summit hosted by the University College of the North with Dr. Ken Coates.

ABOUT

This Summit will feature presentations on mining from First Nations across Canada whose communities are involved in mining. This will provide an opportunity for Manitoba’s First Nations leaders to learn from each other and engage in open and honest conversations. Attendance at the Summit is by invitation and will be limited to First Nations representatives; industry and government officials will not be present.

Learning from First Nations:

  • First Nations roles in the mining activities, including approval and oversight
  • Employment opportunities and business development initiatives
  • Building relationships with mining companies
  • Financial returns to the First Nations
  • Environmental management and plans for mine closure and rehabilitation

PRESENTERS

Darrel Beaulieu is President of Denendeh Investments Incorporated, which manages investments in the mining sector on behalf of the Dene Nations of the Northwest Territories.  He served for three terms as Chief of the Yellowknife First Nation, has run Indigenous development corporations, and is widely recognized as one Canada’s leading specialists on Indigenous engagement in the mining economy.  Darrel has served on numerous territorial committees and organizations and epitomes to provide leadership in regional and national Indigenous organizations.  He was the 2016 recipient of the Skookum Jim Award for Indigenous achievement in the Canadian mining industry.   

 

Jake Docktstaor is a member of the Oneida of the Thames Nation, Jake has spent his life promoting Indigenous economic development. He has spent the last 6 years on the ground working with Indigenous Communities across Central Canada.  Jake is the Executive Director of the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord, a joint venture created by the communities of Kichenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Slate Falls First Nation, Lac Seul First Nation, and Cat Lake First Nation to foster the economic growth and prosperity of the signatory communities and provide lasting opportunities for our people and the region as a whole. Most recently the SLFA successfully secured funding for the creation of a new addictions and treatment center in Northern Ontario and to build rental housing in cooperation with the non-Indigenous community of Sioux Falls, Ontario.
