Learner's Assistance Centre

​What is the Learners’ Assistance Centre (LAC?)

The LAC offers free and confidential learning assistance provided to all students attending UCN. At the LAC we want our students to become better writers and critical thinkers. The goal is to help students develop their academic writing in a friendly and collaborative environment. To access services; students can walk-in, or make an appointment (preferred).
NOTE: During the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are only seeing students through appointments on zoom until further notice.

Getting assistance when you need it is a terrific way to make your studying at UCN successful. The LAC provides an accessible, supportive, student-centered environment where ideas can take shape and students can develop their writing through guidance at the LAC.

The LAC engages, encourages, and empowers all students in their learning. The following are the supports that are provided:

  • Learning styles and study strategies
  • Research
  • Exploring student success strategies (skills for reading and understanding content, note taking, time management, preparing for and writing tests/exams, memory strategies)
  • Writing skills (proofreading, sentence structures, consistent language, paper formatting, editing, grammar and spelling)
  • Preparing for oral presentation
  • Basic math
  • Peer Tutors
  • Succeeding with a disability
  • And more...

LAC guidelines
Please come prepared with a good understanding of your assignment and instructors/professors expectations:

  • Grammar and style
  • Thesis statement(s)
  • Introductory/Concluding paragraphs
  • Topic sentences
  • Citations
  • Print a hard copy of your work, plus outline of what the assignment is about
  • Do your best to finish your draft. If you are still in the process of brainstorming the essay for ideas, it is best to do so with your professor or fellow classmates
  • Meet your professor! Make certain that you fully understand the assignment and expectations.
