Awards, Bursaries & Scholarships

Throughout the academic year, University College of the North Financial Aid and Awards staff assist students by administering awards, bursaries and scholarships that have been made possible through the generosity of many individuals, businesses, corporations, associations, and service organizations. These awards cover the specific requests of the donors and are intended to assist students who have shown outstanding academic achievement, leadership, school or community involvement and/or are in need of financial assistance.   • Award: usually involves multiple criteria such as academic achievement, demonstrated

Kay Campbell Scholarship
Kay Campbell Scholarship Application
The Kay Campbell Scholarship is open to all students entering a post-secondary program in a "helping" profession. Such programs would include, but are not limited to, nursing, social work, child care, education, medicine, ministry, etc. Applicants are required to write about their community and/or school involvement and how their education will benefit them and their community. Deadline for application is May 15 annually; scholarship amount: $1,000.

Manitoba Blue Cross Bursary for Students with Special Needs
UCN Manitoba Blue Cross Bursary for Students with Special Needs Application
The Manitoba Blue Cross Bursary for Students with Special Needs is open to all students entering full-time studies in any program at the University College of the North who must incur additional expenses to attend university/college due to a physical or other disability. Applicants must be a resident of Manitoba. Selection is based on academic standing and financial need. Applicants are required to complete a UCN Manitoba Blue Cross Bursary for Students with Special Needs application and provide a copy of all high school transcripts, a current copy of their university/college unofficial transcript(s) (if grades are unavailable have instructors sign their name by the WIP to confirm regular attendance) and proof of disability. Deadline for application is October 18, 2017; bursary amount: $750.

UCN Manitoba Blue Cross Entrance Award Application
The Manitoba Blue Cross Entrance Award is open to all recent Grade 12 or Mature High School graduates who reside in Manitoba and who are enrolled full-time in any program at the University College of the North. Manitoba Blue Cross Travellers Bursary
UCN Manitoba Blue Cross Travellers Bursary Application
The Manitoba Blue Cross Travellers Bursary is open to all recent Grade 12 or Mature High School graduates who reside in Manitoba and who are enrolled full-time in any program at the University College of the North. Selection is based on high academic standing, financial need and who must travel more than 100 kilometers (one way) to attend university/college. Applicants are required to complete a UCN Manitoba Blue Cross Travellers Bursary application and provide a copy of all official high school transcripts and a current copy of their university/college unofficial transcript(s) (if grades are unavailable have instructors sign their name by the WIP to confirm regular attendance). Deadline for application is October 18, 2017; bursary amount: $750.

MTS Future First Scholarship
MTS Future First Scholarship High School Application
An educated, dynamic workforce is vital to developing vibrant economies and healthy communities. MTS is proud to support students in their pursuit of the skills needed for our province to thrive.

Thinking about chasing your dreams in the telecommunications field?

If you're pursing a post-secondary education you might be eligible for an MTS Future First Scholarship. You could earn: $1,000 towards tuition for up to two years/summer employment opportunities with MTS.

Both high school students entering into their first year of post-secondary studies and current post-secondary students are eligible. Deadline for application is April 30 annually.

Press Radio Entrance Bursary
UCN Press Radio Entrance Bursary Application
The Press Radio Entrance Bursary is open to all students who are entering full-time in an undergraduate degree program at the University College of the North. Selection is based on acceptable academic performance (GPA of 2.0 or higher) and financial need. Applicants are required to submit a completed UCN Press Radio Entrance Bursary application, a letter of reference from a current instructor and a current copy of their university/college unofficial transcript(s) (if grades are unavailable have instructors sign their name by the WIP to confirm regular attendance). Deadline for application is
November 15, 2017; bursaries: 3; bursary amount: $500.

The Scholarship for Visible Minorities is open to all visible minority children/grandchildren (including foster children/grandchildren) of National Union of Public and General Employees current/retired members who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public, post-secondary education institution full-time in 2015/2016. The winner will be determined on the basis of a 750 to 1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities. Deadline for application is July 7, 2017; scholarship amount: $1,500.

The Tommy Douglas Scholarship is open to all children/grandchildren (including foster children/grandchildren) of National Union of Public and General Employees' current/retired members who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public, post-secondary education institution full-time in 2015-2016. The winner will be determined on the basis of a 750 to 1,000 word essay on: How Tommy Douglas' life contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society. BUILDINGFoundations Bursaries
Manitoba Housing understands the vital role education plays in improving the quality of lives.

That's why Manitoba Housing's bursary fund provides nine $1,000 bursaries to post-secondary students living in subsidized rental housing units in Manitoba or receiving a rental subsidy funded by Manitoba Housing.

Bursaries are awarded based on academic achievement and community participation. Mature students are encouraged to apply. Deadline for application is September 30th each year.

CN Diversity Scholarships
Through its Diversity Scholarships, CN offers grants to support the post-secondary education of women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, military veterans, and people of Aboriginal heritage in Canada. Applicants must be enrolled in a technical, undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the following fields of study: Engineering -Civil Engineering; Electrical/Electronics/Telecommunications; Industrial Engineering; Environmental Engineering; Mechanical/Agricultural & Biological Engineering; Railway Infrastructure Engineering (and all things Railroad specific); Software Engineering studies or Computer Sciences; Transportation -Transportation & Logistics; Sales & Marketing -Business Administration/Marketing/Business Development; Human Resources, Aboriginal Studies & Law -Human Resources, Labour Relations; Aboriginal OR Native OR Indigenous Studies (including Native Law); Law; Accounting & Finance -Accounting, Commerce and Finance. Applicants must also have obtained an average of 80% or above over the last three semesters of studies and be interested in and available for a summer internship at CN. Applicants are required to submit a resume, reference letter endorsed by a community or academic leader, copy of most recent academic transcript, and plan of study in more or less than 500 words describing their educational goals and career plans (be sure to talk about any community, family or school initiatives you may be involved in as well as personal challenges, and the importance of the CN scholarship). Deadline for application is April 15, 2017; scholarship amount: $3,000.

Evans Premachuk Scholarship Application
The Evans Premachuk Scholarship is open to any student who is enrolled full-time in the second, third, fourth, or fifth year of at least a two year program at the University College of the North. Selection is based on academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or higher) and community and/or school involvement. Applicants are required to submit a completed UCN Evans Premachuk Scholarship application and provide a current copy of their university/college unofficial transcript(s) (if grades are unavailable have instructors sign their name by the WIP to confirm regular attendance). Applicants are also required to write a one page essay describing their educational goals, future plans and community and/or school involvement. Deadline for application is March 14, 2018; scholarships: 10; scholarship amount: $200.

Gordon Dick Memorial Award
UCN Gordon Dick Memorial Award Application
The Gordon Dick Memorial Award is open to all students who are enrolled full-time in any program at the University College of the North - The Pas Campus and who are dealing with the challenges of personal debt. Applicants are required to provide an original typed essay of no less than 250 words (not to exceed 500 words) on one of the following four topics: “Some of the difficulties I encountered in finding financial resources to fund my education include…”, “More should be done by the government to help alleviate student financial debt because…”, “A university/college education is an expensive commitment…”, “I wish there were more student loans, awards and bursaries available to me because…”. Applicants are also required to complete a UCN Gordon Dick Memorial Award application and provide a current copy of their university/college unofficial transcript(s) (if grades are unavailable have instructors sign their name by the WIP to confirm regular attendance). The Pas Student Association Council will select the candidate who genuinely reflects the spirit of this award. Deadline for application is January 24, 2018; awards: number awarded each year varies; award amount: $250.

The Joe Brain Bursary is open to all returning students continuing full-time in a diploma or undergraduate degree program at the University College of the North. Selection is based on acceptable academic performance (GPA of 2.0 or higher) and financial need. Kin Canada Bursaries
Kin Canada Bursary Application
Kin Canada Bursaries was established in 1994 by Kin Canada as a legacy to its Founder, Harold Allin Rogers, O.C., O.B.E. (1899-1994) and is funded by Kinsmen and Kinettes across Canada. The program was established to promote, encourage and sponsor educational programs and activities, by providing assistance to applicants in their quest for higher learning at a recognized post-secondary institution. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and be a full-time student in the process of graduating from high school or currently studying or registered at a post-secondary institution (to be eligible applicants must plan to register full-time in the 2016-2017 school year at a recognized post-secondary institution). Selection is based on community and school involvement, knowledge of Kin Canada and financial need. Deadline for application is February 1 annually; bursaries: number awarded each year varies, bursary amount: $1,000.

Selection is based on financial need. Applicants are required to write a 500-750 word essay on one of the following topics: a) The Labour Movement in Canada b) The Public Sector Unions in the Canadian Labour Movement or c) Women's Involvement in the Labour Movement. The Joseph Grenier Bursary Application
The Joseph Grenier Bursary is open to any official, dues-paying MGEU member of the Health Care Support Services (HCSS) Component or their spouse/common-law partner, child or ward. Selection is based on financial need. RBC is offering a total of 15 RBC Students Leading Change Scholarships worth $10,000 each. There will be 5 scholarships awarded in each of the following 3 student categories: Graduating High School Students, Undergraduate Students and Second Degree Students. Study in Mining Related Disciplines

Vale recognizes the enormous potential of Manitoba's northern communities and is committed to bringing long-term prosperity to the region. Through Universities Canada, we are offering Post-Secondary Scholarships to Northern Manitoba Students for studies in Mining Related Disciplines.

Business Council of Manitoba Aboriginal Education Awards Application
The Business Council of Manitoba Aboriginal Education Awards are open to all Aboriginal students who are Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Manitoba (have resided in Manitoba for the last 12 months), who plan to enroll in a Manitoba public post-secondary institution in the upcoming academic year in any discipline (trades, business, general studies, science, etc.) and who demonstrate financial need. Applicants are required to maintain full-time status (at least 60% course load), provide proof of Aboriginal ancestry (photocopy of Treaty or Metis card), provide a copy of their official transcript or academic history, resume, and write a one page essay on: "Why you think you should be selected for an award." Helen Betty Osborne Memorial Foundation Award
The Helen Betty Osborne Memorial Foundation makes it possible for Aboriginal post-secondary students to complete their chosen field of study through the provision of financial bursaries bestowed annually to applicants selected by the independent adjudication panel. The amount of the bursary ranges from $500 to $5,000.

Applicants must complete an application form in order to qualify; incomplete applications will not be accepted and will not be presented for adjudication. Applicants are responsible for ensuring their application package is complete. The following must be included with all applications:

Mary Guilbault Metis Bursary Application
The Mary Guilbault Metis Bursary is open to all Metis students who are involved in their community, excel in academics, show financial need and who are a resident of Manitoba for at least 12 months. Applicants are required to provide a transcript or statement of marks from their most recent year, two letters of recommendation (one from a Metis member of the Metis community and one from academic community or employment if out of school for more than one year) and write a 500-1,000 word essay detailing their future plans. Prince of Wales/Princess Anne Award
Awards are available for Canadian Aboriginal students attending post-secondary institutions in Canada. Manitoba Student Aid determines eligibility as part of the Manitoba Student Aid application. The online application is available on the Manitoba Student Aid website at www.manitobastudentaid.ca. Applicants with an assessed need of $1 or more (a needs assessment is conducted to determine eligibility for all funding administered by Manitoba Student Aid) will be eligible to receive a $250 award.

RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program
The RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program was launched to assist Aboriginal students to complete post-secondary education and provide an opportunity for RBC to strengthen its relationship with the Aboriginal community. Selected students are awarded up to $4,000 each academic year for two to four years to use towards tuition, textbooks, supplies and living expenses. RBC awards 10 scholarships in two categories: for students majoring in disciplines related to the financial services industry and for students majoring in disciplines unrelated to the financial services industry. Applicants must be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada, have applied or are currently attending an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada, maintain a full course load that leads to a recognized degree, certificate or diploma, have at least two years remaining in post-secondary academic program as of September 2015, and require financial assistance to pursue education. Deadline for application is February 28, 2017.

The Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians is open to all Aboriginal Canadian children/grandchildren (including foster children/grandchildren) of National Union of Public and General Employees' current/retired members who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public, post-secondary education institution full-time in 2015-2016. TWCC Scholarship Awards Program
Tribal Wi-Chi-Way-Win Capital Corporation (TWCC) hosts an Annual Fundraising Golf Tournament to raise funds for the TWCC Scholarship Awards Program. The program was established in 2005, and was designed to promote First Nation students in Manitoba pursuing their post-secondary studies in the form of a certificate, diploma and/or degree. To date, TWCC has awarded over $100,000 in post-secondary scholarships to students in Manitoba.

Orville Erickson Memorial Scholarships
The Orville Erickson Memorial Scholarships are awarded once per year to post-secondary students in the field of conservation. The fund is administered by the Canadian Wildlife Foundation and is financed entirely by private-sector donations in memory of Orville Erickson, a prominent Canadian conservationist and past CWF president. Applicants must be competent, full-time students registered in a recognized Canadian educational institute and be citizens of Canada, or landed immigrants, with the intent of working in Canada. Deadline for application is May 25 annually; scholarship amounts: vary per year ($500-$4,000).

The Prince of Wales Forest Leadership Award
The Prince of Wales Forest Leadership Award Application
This inaugural award recognizes students and recent graduates who have actively engaged in forestry or natural resource management and have demonstrated a passion for the environment and a desire to solve complex problems. A total of 4 award-winners, 2 from Canada and 2 from the United Kingdom, will take part in the International Forestry Student Exchange Program during the summer of 2015. This program connects future forestry leaders with all the resources required for success-providing unique experiences and opportunities, and empowering participants, while significantly contributing to employers and host countries alike. Award winners will receive a bursary of C$12,000 total (C$6,000 from TD Bank and C$6,000 from employers). Participants will cover their own expenses, including flights, accommodation, local transportation, food, insurance, and incidentals. Deadline for application is December 31, 2016 at 11:59 p.m.

Qualification Criteria
Must be a Canadian citizen and able to travel to the United Kingdom.
Students who have spent 3 years in an accredited university forestry program would be eligible to go on the exchange after:

the 3rd year of a 4 year degree course, or:
immediately after graduating with a degree (after 4th year), or;
after graduating from a Master degree in Forestry

Students who have finished at least one full year, or recently graduated from a college forestry/natural resources technical program, are also eligible.

Canadian Nurses Foundation Scholarships
 

Conditional Grant for Manitoba's Nursing Graduates
This program was established to encourage new graduates to relocate to rural communities in Manitoba, subsequently reducing the number of rural nursing vacancies. Note: As of June 12, 2008, Licensed Practical Nurses are eligible for the Conditional Grant Program.
 
In order to qualify for the conditional grant, the applicant must: Be a recent graduate from an approved program and within six months of initial registration as a Registered Nurse, Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Registered Nurse Extended Practice (RNEP); Be willing to relocate to a site in rural or northern Manitoba (outside of Winnipeg or Brandon); Have written confirmation of employment in a permanent or term nursing position of 0.6 equivalent full-time (EFT) or higher. Casual positions do not qualify for the grant.; Be willing to return service for a period of twelve months; Be a Manitoba nursing graduate; Submit application forms and all documentation to the Nurses Recruitment and Retention Fund, within 6 months of initial registration with their nursing college as an RN, RPN, LPN, or RNEP.

Manitoba Nurses Union Joyce Gleason Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Joyce Gleason Memorial Scholarship is open to any student who is enrolled for the first time in a nursing program at a Manitoba institution; students may apply for the scholarship in any year of the nursing program. Applicants are required to write a 750 to 1,000 word essay addressing the following points: why you wish to be a nurse, why you want to practice in Manitoba, what you understand will be the challenges of nursing in Manitoba, what aspects of a nursing career appeal to you, and what aspects of a nursing career will be particularly challenging for you. The Raifta Shwedyk Health Care Educational Assistance Bursary
 
Introduction
A five hundred ($500) dollar health care education assistance bursary will be awarded annually in memory of the late Mrs. Raifta Shwedyk.
 
Eligibility
To be eligible for the receipt of the Raifta Shwedyk Bursary, the following criteria must be satisfied:
 
a) An applicant must be registered and in attendance at a post-secondary education institution which includes but is not necessarily limited to a: university, community college or career college
b) The applicant must be pursuing a career in the health care field, which includes but is not limited to: nursing, physician, health care aide, optometrist, occupational therapist, or physical therapist
c) You must be a Manitoba resident. Preference will be given to applicants that are residents/or from the area served by the Parkland Multiple Sclerosis Society.
 
Registration
Complete the application form above. All applications must be submitted on or before May 31, 2016 to be considered for an education assistance bursary awarded in that year. Successful applicants will be notified by registered mail.
In addition to the requisite application form satisfactory evidence confirming course registration and payment of tuition fees or associated costs must be submitted. The Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Council Ladies Auxiliary University Scholarship
The Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Council Ladies Auxiliary University Scholarship is open to any student who is a resident of Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario Command and is entering or continuing in the Faculty of Physio Therapy, Masters of Occupational Therapy or Bachelor of Nursing in a recognized Canadian University on a full-time basis. To be eligible for the Bachelor of Nursing Scholarship, the applicant must have completed Grade 12 and/or a minimum of the first year of study in University 1 as required by the Faculty of Nursing. Applicants are required to include a letter of acceptance from the University indicating the Faculty to which he/she have been admitted and a copy of their official transcript of their last year of formal education. Town of The Pas Nursing Bursary Application
The Town of The Pas Nursing Bursary is open to all students who are residents of the Town of The Pas for a minimum of six months prior to acceptance in the Bachelor of Nursing Program at the University College of the North. Applicants must be entering second, third or fourth year of the program on a full-time basis. Selection is based on financial need. Applicants are required to complete a UCN Town of The Pas Nursing Bursary application, provide 2 proof of residency documents (e.g. telephone bill, property tax bill, rent receipt, etc.) 1- which includes address six months prior to acceptance in program and 1-which includes current address. Residency documents must contain student name and physical location address. Applicants are also required to provide a current copy of their university/college unofficial transcript(s) (if grades are unavailable have instructors sign their name by the WIP to confirm regular attendance). Deadline for application is April 11, 2018; bursary amount: $1,000.

Early Childhood Education Tuition Support Conditional Grant Application
A conditional grant of up to $4,000 to cover the tuition costs of one school year is available for students taking a two or three-year Early Childhood Education (ECE) Diploma Program at a Manitoba college. Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada, be a daytime student enrolled in a two or three-year approved ECE diploma program (Note: Students enrolled in an ECE Workplace Program are not eligible.), successfully complete the first year of ECE diploma course, confirm their enrollment in the second year of the ECE diploma course, complete the two or three-year ECE diploma program in consecutive years, and promise to work two continuous years in a licensed child care program in Manitoba (starting within 90 days of graduation from the ECE diploma program). Deadline for application is 60 days after the start date of classes.

Applicants agree that by applying for this award, they give permission for their name to be published in government and university/college publications. The Manitoba Council for Exceptional Children Scholarship Application
The Manitoba Council For Exceptional Children Scholarship is open to any Grade 12 or returning university student from Manitoba who is pursuing a career directly related to working with persons with exceptionalities. Applicants must be entering or in a current full-time education program in a Canadian post-secondary institution. Applicants are required to complete all sections of the application form, attach a current resume which includes school and community activities and write a 500-600 academic scholarship essay (please see scholarship application for essay details). Trades & Technology Awards

Apprenticeship Grants
As an apprentice in a Red Seal trade, you get to earn while you learn, but a little extra money can always help. The Government of Canada provides up to $4,000 in federal apprenticeship grants to help you progress in or complete your apprenticeship training.

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)
The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or per level, up to a maximum amount of $2,000 per person.

To be eligible for the AIG, you must:

-be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person;
-not be a high school student;
-have the required AIG supporting documents;
-be registered with your provincial/territorial apprenticeship authority as an apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade; and
-provide proof that you have successfully completed either the 1st and/or 2nd year or level (or equivalent) in a designated Red Seal trade.

The deadline to apply is June 30 of the year after you complete the first and/or second year or level.

The Arthur Paulin Aftermarket Scholarship Award
The Arthur Paulin Aftermarket Scholarship is open to any student who is enrolled in an automotive aftermarket industry related program or curriculum at a Canadian college or university. This includes students pursuing their studies as an automotive apprentice or in any of the following automotive sectors: auto body, hard parts, heavy duty, or motive power (machinists). Applicants are required to submit a letter outlining their long-term automotive goals, a letter from their primary automotive instructor stating why the instructor feels the applicant is worthy of receiving the scholarship, a copy of their most recent academic record, a brief outline of their demonstrated leadership and civic abilities, and an outline of their financial considerations as they relate to their pursuit of automotive studies. Deadline for application is November 30 annually; scholarship amount: $700.

AIA and the Global Automotive Aftermarket Symposium (GAAS) Scholarship
The Global Automotive Aftermarket Symposium Scholarship is open to any student who is a graduating high school senior or who has graduated from high school within the past two years and who is enrolled in a college-level program, university or an accredited automotive technical program through either a Canadian Association of Motive Power Educators college or a CARS-approved institute. Applicants must be enrolled full-time for the year of the scholarship and must be enrolled from September of the year they are applying until April of the following year. Priority will be given to those pursuing a career in the automotive aftermarket; participants must be attending a full-time program in Canada. Applicants are required to submit a copy of their most recent academic record, letter of recommendation from either an employer or teacher, a recent photograph for use in promotional materials, and write a 250 word essay indicating why they believe they deserve to be chosen to receive a scholarship. Deadline for application is June 15 annually; scholarship amount: $1,000.

UCN Lieutenant-Governor Medals Nomination Form
The Lieutenant-Governor Medals, one gold and three silver, are awarded annually at Convocation to graduating students from any post-secondary program at the University College of the North. Selection is based on high academic or technical ability, participation in university/college and/or community activities and good character and personality.

Students who meet the criteria are eligible to be nominated for one of the following medals:

Silver Medal for Certificate Programs (excluding Trades Programs)
Silver Medal for Trades Programs
Silver Medal for Diploma Programs
Gold Medal for University Programs

Lorimer Award
UCN Lorimer Award Nomination Form
The Lorimer Award is presented by the University College of the North in recognition of outstanding service to education in Northern Manitoba (north of the 53rd parallel).

The award was named in honour of the late Dr. W.C. Lorimer, a distinguished Manitoba educator, who served as Deputy Minister of Education from 1967 to 1978.

The recipient of this award will have *made contributions in the educational field that are well beyond the call of duty and shall have had a major constructive impact. Their work, past and/or present, has involved a very substantial and continued commitment to Northern education.

Nominees may be a student, former student, employee of the University College of the North or a member of the community whose work fits the purpose of this award.

Nominations will be accepted until March 21, 2018 and must include a completed UCN Lorimer Award Nomination Form and three letters of support (not from a relative). All letters of support must provide concrete examples and clearly outline how the nominee meets the award criteria and why the nominee should be chosen to receive this award.

Valedictorian
UCN Valedictorian Nomination Form
The Valedictorian will write and deliver a formal address to all fellow graduating students, faculty, honored guests, friends, and family attending Convocation. This honour will be bestowed upon one graduating student of the University College of the North The Pas Campus and one graduating student of the University College of the North Thompson Campus. Selection is based on acceptable academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or higher) and involvement in university/college extracurricular activities. Candidates must be a graduand of the University College of the North Class of 2018 of either The Pas or Thompson Campus, have strong public speaking skills and have applied to attend Convocation. All students who meet the criteria are eligible to be nominated.

Recommendation letters, two peer and one instructor, detailing how the nominee meets the criteria must accompany a completed UCN Valedictorian Nomination Form.
