Grand Rapids (Misipawistik)

Barbara Nasikapow
Regional Centre Coordinator
The Misipawistik Regional Centre is located in the northern reserve of Misipawistik Cree Nation, formerly known as "Grand Rapids Cree Nation". The word "Misipawistik" in the local cree language, means rushing rapids. The MCN reserve is situated at the mouth of the Saskatchewan River as it runs into Lake Winnipeg and encompasses 1852.3 hectares of land.
In consultation with Misipawistik Cree Nation membership and administration, the regional centre will develop valuable programs to develop skills and training for all.
Misipawistik Cree Nation and the University College of the North agreed in principle to develop a regional centre in Grand Rapids. The doors of the Misipawistik Regional Centre were open in July 2007.
The University College of the North Regional Centre is committed to providing education and training services to meet the needs of individuals, industry, business, agencies and community organization throughout northern Manitoba.
