Cross Lake (Pimicikamak)

Jacqueline Garrioch
Regional Centre Coordinator
The Pimicikamak Regional Centre is located in the northern community of Cross Lake, Manitoba at the north of the Nelson River where it crosses the lake; 520 air kilometers north of Winnipeg, and 130 kilometers south of Thompson. The population base of the community is approximately 6300 people with the main traditional lifestyles of trapping, hunting, and commercial fishing. The regional centre exceeds 100 students registered in various programs including Adult Education, college certificate and diploma programs, and university degrees.
In 1998, the school board and administration of the Cross Lake Education Authority and representatives of Keewatin Community College entered into discussions to establish a partnership arrangement to support a Regional Centre in Cross Lake. In December 1999 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the two parties in Cross Lake, Manitoba establishing the first regional centre located on reserve. This successful partnership created the model for additional regional centres that followed.
While the MOU was only signed in December 1999, the Pimicikamak (Cross Lake) Regional Centre has been the delivery site of community based programming in Cross Lake long before 1999. Previous to that programs were delivered in the community as contract training initiatives which were a costly endeavour for the Cross Lake Education Authority. The partnership arrangement has enabled the Cross Lake Education Authority to deliver more community based programming at lower cost.
The following certificate and diploma programs have been delivered as community based programs since 1999: College Preparation, General Studies, Health Care Aide, Transition Year, Business Administration, Computerized Business Applications, Early Childhood Education, Small Motor Repair, Heavy Equipment Operator, Automotive Mechanics, Basic Electrical, and Pre-employment Plumbing. The Mature Student program is also delivered to adult students who wish to earn their high school diploma.
Delivery of some of these programs have been made possible in part by Cross Lake Education Authority entering into cost sharing arrangements with Cross Lake First Nation Pathways and Manitoba Employment & Training: The Cross Lake Education also has a partnership arrangement with BUNTEP Brandon University to deliver the five year teacher education program in the community. Students in this program will complete their degrees by May 2008. The Centre has high student numbers in various college certificate, diploma and university level programs.
