 Student For A Day

What is Student for a Day?

Student for a Day is an opportunity for prospective students to experience what a day in the life of a UCN student feels like. By attending Student for a Day, prospective students have the opportunity to meet with a UCN advisor, participate in a campus tour to learn about our facilities and services, and attend classes/labs to get a glimpse into their program of interest.

When is Student for a Day offered and how can I register?

Student for a Day will be offered from September to April with certain restrictions for UCN events such as exams and Reading Week.

Everyone must submit this Registration Form. This Permission Slip is required if you are under 18 years of age.

Please note that the form must be submitted a minimum of 7 business days prior to your requested date. We will make every effort to accommodate your preferred date(s), but will contact you as soon as possible if alternate dates need to be arranged.

You must use the internet explorer browser to use the fillable forms contained in this page. If you encounter problems, please contact the Recruitment Officer/ Sponsor Liaisons listed at the bottom of this page to complete registration for the Student For a Day program. If you are submitting the form from a computer using webmail you must save the completed form to your computer and attach to an email and send to student-recruitment@ucn.ca

Do all programs participate in Student for a Day?

Most UCN programs participate in this initiative. Find a full listing of participating programs on the registration form. Also note that some programs are only available where indicated.

What is included in Student for a Day?

UCN has a wide range of programs, and therefore Student for a Day will look different for each program. Typically, Student for a Day visits will include shadowing a current UCN student enrolled in your program of interest.   Registrants can also take part in a guided tour of the facility with special emphasis on areas of individual interest, and a student recruitment presentation.  Students who are considering attending UCN and currently completing, or have completed their secondary school requirements will have the $50.00 application fee waived should they submit the application on the day of their Student for a Day participation.

All participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or can purchase lunches at either campus’s food service providers

Will I get to spend the entire day with a current student?

When schedules allow, you may spend the entire day with one student mentor however, class schedules may warrant placements with other student mentors.

Will I have a chance to talk to instructors?

While there may be an opportunity to talk to instructors, it is not a guarantee, as they will be focused on teaching the class/lab you are observing.

Keep in mind that Student for a Day is an opportunity to experience a day as a student in your program of interest, but it is not a career investigation or informational interview opportunity. If you have questions about career opportunities and labor trends, we suggest that you speak with the Student Recruitment Officers.

What if I am unsure of my career direction?

Student Recruitment Officers can help you arrange for a Career Cruising evaluation with the UCN Assessment Officers to help narrow down career choices that may be of interest to you. The career cruising session takes no more than 1 hour.

What is the minimum age requirement?

Student for a Day is only available for those students that are at least 15 years of age. Any person under the age of 18 must have permission from a legal guardian to attend. Permission slips are available on the UCN Home Page in the Student For a Day, hot link and must be submitted prior to or on the date of the event.

Students under the age of 18 that do not supply a permission slip will not be permitted to take part.
