Why did you choose UCN and the Office Assistant Program?
I was looking to go to college in Canada, and I heard good things about UCN. We have friends who work here in The Pas and thought it would be an easier move.
I was looking for a one-year certification with good job opportunities around Canada. I saw many job opportunities related to office administration, so I thought it would be a good option!
I really believe that my certification from this program gave me more opportunities. As I mentioned, I was looking for office administration jobs around The Pas, and most of them required an office administration-related certification. So that is a big part of why I took this program at UCN!
Who has impacted your time at UCN?
Iām truly blessed to have my Office Administration Instructors, Kelly and Penny, who have helped me a lot, especially as an international student.
I moved just three weeks before my classes, so it was an adjustment for me both physically and mentally. But my instructors were so nice and understood my situation, time constraints, and difficulty adapting. Sometimes, I also have some language troubles, but they were supportive, understanding, and very flexible. They were amazing as instructors and people, and I was lucky to connect with them very quickly after I started at UCN.
Outside of my classes, I have also been able to connect with others on campus. Instructor Selvin Peters is also from South India, and I have been lucky to have a great connection with him. He also helped me a lot and encouraged me to finish my program. Iām also working part-time at the library, so I have been lucky to make connections with the library team as well. Everyone has been so understanding and encouraging!
What is your most memorable experience at UCN?
I love going to classes and working with people, so I was so happy when I was offered the job at UCN Library! I got a student card and everything set up, but the very next week, I got the staff card. It was a very good moment for me and I will always remember that day!
What is the most important lesson you have learned during your time at UCN?
The importance of being polite, kind, approachable and helping others. It allows you to understand people and their difficult situations, and being available to support them means a lot!
What is next for you? Tell us about your future!
I am graduating and have an amazing practical opportunity at the Legal Aid Office. So, I plan to finish there, continue to apply for jobs that match the immigration requirements, and get my visa approved!
What advice would you give someone who is just starting at UCN?
This will be a great experience for you, and you will enjoy it all! This is a great opportunity here.
